Kayaking in Speyside

During Summer 2020 we noticed the growing popularity of inflatable kayaks and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) giving people flexibility and control during the Covid-19 pandemic. We certainly took advantage of this and enjoyed exploring the local lochs of:  Loch Garten, Loch Mallachie, Loch Pityoulish, Loch an Eilein and Loch Morlich. Here are some of the photos taken whilst exploring these lochs. In addition, the local watersport centres at Loch Morlich and Loch Insh have been offering comprehensive watersport hire and instruction.

August is a great month for foraging of plants and mushrooms including the blaeberry, wild raspberry and chanterelle. It is worth being prepared when out in the forests so that these tasty berries can be eaten as you find them or picked and made into pies, muffins and jams. Our particular favourite for chanterelles is to fry them with butter and garlic and serve them on the local oatcakes from Balliefurth Farm Food shop. Remember, you must be 100% certain of your plant identification in order to avoid poisonous plants which look similar and it is also important to forage...

Nethy Bridge has been enjoying a recent heat wave and whilst walking the ‘Castle Roy circuit’ we were delighted to see that Murdo, the Castle Roy Guardian in Chief, was being well cared for with his own sun umbrella! Castle Roy is a 12th century fortress on the North side of Nethy Bridge built by the Clan Comyn. It is a simple 4 sided stronghold that remains unaltered. Following notice from the Scottish Government the team at Ryvoan Lodge are ready to welcome guests from 3rd July. We cannot wait to welcome guests back to Ryvoan Lodge and Cairngorm National Park to enjoy this special place. Ryvoan Lodge is a member of the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers (ASSC) which has developed a strict cleaning protocol for self-catering. The Scottish Government has endorsed this re-opening cleaning protocol and ASSC are working closely with them to ensure that the self-catering sector can re-open safely and securely.
